Did you know that coffee grounds have amazing benefits for you skin?

Did you know that coffee grounds have amazing benefits for you skin?

You wouldn’t want to rub this morning’s leftover dry coffee grounds on your skin (ouch!), but when you combine quality coffee grounds with other natural ingredients to create a coffee scrub, the benefits for your skin are immediately noticeable.
Coffee scrub has several benefits that include: exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties, temporary reduction of cellulite, improved circulation, reduced eye puffiness, and smooth skin.

Coffee Scrub Is Soothing

Instead of using body scrubs with harsh chemicals, coffee scrubs like Neutriherbs Coffee Body Scrub combine coffee grounds with salt, sugar, and oils that leave your skin nourished and moisturized rather than just cleansed.
In fact, coffee scrubs like Neutriherbs Coffee Body Scrub that use all-natural ingredients can easily be used as a replacement for body scrubs and exfoliators that contain chemicals—who wants to rub chemicals on themselves when there is an all-natural alternative to achieve healthy, smooth skin!?

Exfoliating Properties

Coffee scrub usually has three main ingredients that, when combined, create the ultimate exfoliator:
  • coffee grounds
  • salt
  • sugar
Neutriherbs Coffee Body Scrub uses Himalayan rock salt as well as brown sugar because both of these ingredients contain natural minerals and acids that fight off nasty bacteria and are beneficial for your skin.
By applying to the skin in a gentle circular motion, coffee scrub exfoliates the skin, removing your dry, dead skin, to reveal new, healthy-looking skin underneath.

Caffeine Benefits For Skin

Aside from the amazing exfoliation that coffee scrub provides, it also has another secret weapon for your skin: caffeine.
Caffeine is a compound that is found abundantly in tea and coffee plants around the world. Technically a psychoactive drug, caffeine has become the world’s most popular stimulant because it works so effectively.
While we all know the benefits that caffeine has on the mind and body when we drink a cup of coffee, the lesser known benefits are the effects it has when we apply it to our skin.
Caffeine helps tighten the skin, which can help reduce cellulite. When applied under and around the eyes, it can minimize the appearance of puffy eyes because caffeine restricts blood vessels, which reduces swelling and inflammation. It can also help treat non-hereditary dark circles under the eyes.
Caffeine is also loaded with antioxidants, which help to fight premature skin aging like wrinkles, sun spots, and fine lines.

Not All Coffee Scrubs Are Created Equal

The caffeine content of the coffee scrub is also an important factor.
Some coffee scrubs will use brewed coffee grounds, which means much of the caffeine content is depleted when the grounds are repurposed into a coffee scrub. Some scrubs also use Arabica coffee beans, which almost all coffee that you drink is made from.

The Best Skin Tips You've Never Heard

The Best Skin Tips You've Never Heard

Yes, even that tiny tube of hotel face cream does something. Any emollient will not only temporarily plump up fine lines but also help prevent skin aging. "When we do a peel or surgery, probably the single most important factor in wound healing is keeping the area well moisturized," points out Richard Fitzpatrick, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Sun damage, he notes, is no different: A daily lotion containing glycerin, shea butter, or another basic hydrator "allows your skin to repair itself much more effectively." It also increases its mobility, making repetitive smiles and squints less punishing to the face. That said, the basics should be used only in a pinch. For daily use, dermatologists prefer moisturizers spiked with ingredients designed to boost cell turnover, stimulate collagen growth, and banish DNA-damaging free radicals.
Forget pulled hamstrings. The most overlooked gym-induced strain hits us above the shoulders. "I can pinpoint women who tense the jaw and throat when exercising, because it makes the cords of the neck more prominent and pulls down the face," says Fredric Brandt, a dermatologist in New York City and Miami.
Don't assume you're inoculated against photodamage just because the sun is barely up when you leave for work and sets on your commute home. Unlike UVB light, UVA rays travel through windows in the office, home, and car, warns Dover. Until recently, few worried much about the latter wavelength, partly because it causes a tenth as much tanning as the former. But in fact, "two very important studies a few years ago showed that UVA is carcinogenic and induces the grayish, yellow-y cast you see on older people's skin," says Dover, who recalls one laser-resurfacing patient whose wrinkling was "five times worse on one side" from years of daily drives between New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Those who don't spend most of their waking hours in a cinder-block bunker should "wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen 365 days a year, rain or shine," he says.
All the SPF and sun avoidance in the world can't protect you from the space heater next to your desk or the fireplace in your living room. Direct exposure from two to three feet away causes redness and a breakdown of collagen, says Brandt, who advises sitting at least ten feet away.
Guzzle water, the advice goes, and your skin will thank you. But New York City and Santa Monica dermatologist Karyn Grossman cringes when she sees women toting around bottles of water—or any other drink. As with straws, "the constant pursing creates lines and aggravates existing ones around the mouth," she says. Her suggestions for saving face: Sip filtered water from a glass at home, and carry a reusable bottle with a spout "so that you can squirt it into your mouth instead of sucking on the top."
Fusco can tell which side a patient sleeps on by the vertical line on her cheek. "The skin is pressed against wrinkles in the fabric," she says. The best way to avoid sleep lines is to snooze on your back. A more realistic strategy: smooth pillowcases. "Satin or silk is best," says Fusco. "Or buy the softest, highest-thread-count fabric you can."

The 5 Steps to Correctly Washing Your Face

Step #1: Wash your face with lukewarm water and a cream cleanser. Warm water helps lift the dirt out of your skin, but hot water can be too drying. Cream cleansers are more hydrating, but if you wear a lot of makeup, you might want to use a gel cleanser and/or a makeup remover instead. After washing, dab your face with a towel—don’t rub. It will stretch your skin and lead to wrinkles.

Step #2: Take a cotton ball and dip it in toner and swipe it around your face, focusing on problem areas. For example, if you have an oily t-zone, toner is a huge help. You don’t need a lot! Just one soaked cotton ball is perfect.

Step #3: Serum is like a green juice for your skin. There are some amazing high-end ones, but you don’t need to spend to over due it—L’Oreal has some amazing ones that you can get at your local drugstore. Use one or two pumps for your entire face. This is also a great way to address any specific issues you have with your skin, because they make serums for everything: anti-aging, moisturizing, redness, etc.

Step #4: You can also mix your serum in with your moisturizer, which cuts down on a step. For night, pick a heavier moisturizer, but for day, make sure you choose one with SPF if you’re not going to apply sunscreen on your own.

Step #5: The last step—don’t forget your eye cream! The under eye area is the thinnest part of your skin, so it’s desperate for moisture. Massage or pat a pea-sized amount of eye cream under your eyes about half an inch under your brow bone. If you’re putting on makeup afterwards, wait a few minutes so the cream can sink in.

Face Serum, The FAQs

You are not alone in having no earthly idea what a serum is. Even if you're the proud owner of several serums, it's not a particularly clear product on it's surface. Think of the contradictions: It's moisturizing, but you still use moisturizer. It can be oily, but it's not necessarily face oil. It can be watery, but is it essence? So many questions and we haven't even gotten to ingredient lists yet!

Skincare should never stress you out (that would sort of defeat the purpose), so we pooled our collective knowledge, did a bit more research, and compiled a cheat sheet of sorts. There's not going to be a test, but study up anyway. We hear skincare talk makes great party ice breakers.

What is serum?
Serum is a skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing with the intent of delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin. Serum is particularly suited to this task because it is made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients. This makes them a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns, like wrinkles. Goodbye, signs of aging!

Is serum a moisturizer?
Yes and no. Serums can be chock-full of moisturizing ingredients (hyaluronic acid, ceramides) to help skin retain moisture. But, that doesn't make them moisturizers in the traditional sense. Face lotions and creams are richer and create a barrier on top of the skin to keep all that good stuff in.

How often should I use my serum?
Well, this all depends on the serum. Read the label, but once a day will probably cover your bases.

OK but $$$$...
Yes, serums tend to be on the pricier end of the skincare spectrum. But for a pretty decent reason! Remember that bit about being super concentrated and potent? You are getting your bang for your buck here...

Doesn't serum expire really fast?
Certain potent ingredients often found in serum can become unstable once they come in contact with air. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), for instace, can oxidize and lose efficacy over time. But thanks to science, modified versions of the ingredient (that are water-soluble, etc.) last longer so they can do your skin more good. Best rule of thumb is to store your vial in a cool, dry place (obviously) and use it up within six months to a year.

Is serum right for your skin?
Probably. Get to know your ingredients first. If you're...
Acne-prone: Look for vitamin C (increases collagen production, enhances skin’s repair process, and reduces inflammation), retinol (also an antioxidant, reduces inflammation), zinc (soothes irritation, regulates oil production), and salicylic acid (unclogs pores).

How to use face serum with moisturizer?

In my article on tips to optimize your facial moisturizer, I mentioned the importance of leaving your toner damp before applying your moisturizer as the cream will help seal the hydrating benefits from the toner deep into the skin.   However, if you’re using a face serum, when should you apply your serum and when should you apply your moisturizer?

If you’re using a face serum, you should also be applying on toner damp skin (unless it’s a prescription topical.)  After which, you should wait at least 5 minutes until the serum is fully absorbed by the skin before applying your moisturizer in order to seal and magnify the benefits of the serum.

This is because a good serum  provides intensive care to treat problem or fragile areas and it aims to penetrate deep into the three layers of the skin to strengthen the cells as well as deliver active ingredients to your skin.  Although a moisturizer only helps with the superficial layers of the skin by retaining moisture on the surface of the skin and preventing it from evaporating, a good face serum will actually help your moisturizer to penetrate deeper and provide effective hydration.  So, always allow time for your serum to be well absorbed into your skin.

Additionally, you may like to know that it isn’t always necessary to use a face serum with a moisturizer. If you’re using a moisturizing face serum with emollient properties, your serum may double up as a moisturizer.  But if your skin is very dry and needs more hydration, then you will need to use a face cream for richer moisture, on top of the face serum.

6 Diet Tips for Youthful Skin

6 Diet Tips for Youthful Skin

A beautiful, radiant and glowing skin is every girl's dream. It's easy to achieve it by avoiding sugar as much as possible and by eating products such as olive oil, avocado and macadamia nut oil.

Doctor Stefanie Williams shares simple changes to your nutrition intake that will greatly impact your skin.

- Cut out the sugar: The less sugar we eat, the better it is. Many natural sweeteners like honey and agave syrup are high in fructose and should also be avoided as should sugary fruits (tropical fruits are the worst), fruit juice and dried fruit. Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame should be strictly avoided. Not only are they nasty chemical substances, but they have also been connected to obesity and diabetes.

- Eat more healthy fat: One of the crucial things our body and our skin needs for long-term health is fat. Studies have shown that eating more fat makes our skin more elastic and less wrinkly. The increase in fat consumption has to be done in conjunction with sugar and grain reduction. Monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, avocado and macadamia nut oil are well-known to be good for us.

- Greatly reduce your grain and starch intake: Most people believe that a diet rich in grains is good for health; whole grains in particular are touted as especially healthy. But starches, the carbohydrates in grains, are simply long strings of sugar molecules and eating them will still make our skin and body age prematurely.

- Eat lots of vegetables: Vegetables will also provide you with plenty of fibre and antioxidants. However, make sure to cut down on starchy vegetables, as they can have a surprisingly strong effect on our blood sugar level. For example roast parsnips can bring up our blood sugar more than pure table sugar. Good fruit options are berries, as they are relatively low in sugar and high in antioxidants.

- Don't forget your daily protein: Protein provides important building blocks for our entire body. However, our body has little capacity to store protein. So, to supply our body and skin with all it needs, we have to provide it with sufficient amounts of protein on a daily basis.

- Spice up your life: Herbs and spices including rosemary, garlic, curcumin and cinnamon are a great addition to any skin health and longevity eating plan. Not only do spices greatly add flavour and variety of our food, but they also contain bioactive substances with positive effects on general health, skin and life span.

How to Find the Best Skin Care Products for Your Face

Step 1

Determine your skin type. Splash your face five or six times with lukewarm water. If after a few minutes your skin feels tight, you have dry skin. If not, wait 20 minutes and press a facial tissue against your skin. If you see oily spots on the tissue, you have oily skin. If you see greasy areas on your T-zone only, you have combination skin.

Step 2

Stick to the basics. You'll only need three products to have an effective skin care routine. Begin by washing skin with a gentle cleanser that is formulated for your skin type; apply a daily moisturizer with an SPF of 30 and finish the evening with a night cream. Use these products regularly to pamper your complexion.

Step 3

Pick your top skin care need—such as wrinkle and fine line reduction—and narrow your product choices to those that specifically target that need, recommend the American Academy of Dermatology. While it is tempting to choose a skin care product that purports to meet several needs, such as cleansing and moisturizing, the academy says such products are not as effective or may cause excessive skin irritation.

Step 4

Read the ingredients lists on the various products you’re comparing. Verify that it contains a sunscreen ingredient if you plan to wear the skin care product during the day, according to skin care tester Paula Begoun. She says that effective sunscreen ingredients include avobenzone and zinc oxide. Ideally, the American Cancer Society reports that a daytime skin care product should contain an SPF of 15 or more.

Step 5

Use products with active ingredients. If you are looking to reduce the signs of aging, the best product for your skin type should include a proven active ingredient. Some anti-aging active ingredients include: retinoids, peptides, kogic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, hydroquinone or salicylic acid. Only a few active ingredients have the authoritative scientific studies to prove that they can reduce any signs of aging. Other inactive or active ingredients do work. However, there are not any studies to back up the manufacturer's claims.

Step 6

Toss out any skin care product that contains fragrances. A quick glance at the ingredient list, or even a whiff of the product through an open cap, can alert you to the presence of perfumes. The CNN Health website warns that fragrances in skin care products are the most common source of skin allergies and irritation.

Step 7

Ignore the price while comparing the products. The American Academy of Dermatology says price doesn’t indicate a product’s quality, and that even cheap, drugstore brands are beneficial to your skin.

Prevent skin cancer

Follow these tips to protect your skin from the damaging effects of sun exposure and reduce your risk of skin cancer:
  • Apply sunscreen. When you are going to be outside, even on cloudy days, apply sunscreen to all skin that will not be covered by clothing. Reapply approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen that protects the skin against both UVA and UVB rays and that has an SPF of at least 30. Use these tips when selecting a sunscreen .
  • Use one ounce of sunscreen, an amount that is about equal to the size of your palm. Thoroughly rub the product into the skin. Don’t forget the top of your feet, your neck, ears, and the top of your head.
  • Seek shade. Remember that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade.
  • Protect your skin with clothing. When going outside wear a long‐sleeved shirt, pants, a wide‐brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Use extra caution near water, sand or snow as they reflect and intensify the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chances of sunburn.

  • Get vitamin D safely. Eat a healthy diet that includes foods naturally rich in vitamin D, or take vitamin D supplements. Do not seek the sun.

  • If you want to look tan, consider using a self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen with it. Don’t use tanning beds. Just like the sun, UV light from tanning beds can cause wrinkling and age spots and can lead to skin cancer.

  • Check your skin for signs of skin cancer. Your birthday is a great time to check your birthday suit. Checking your skin and knowing your moles are key to detecting skin cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.
