How to create an anti-aging skin care plan

Anti-aging skin care tips

  1. Protect your skin from the sun: Sun protection forms the foundation of every anti-aging skin-care plan. The sun’s rays make our skin age more quickly. We have so much evidence that the sun prematurely ages our skin that there is actually a word to describe this effect. This word is “photoaging.” To help patients protect their skin from the sun and other harmful UV rays, dermatologists offer these tips:
    • Seek shade: Be sure to seek shade between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and whenever your shadow looks shorter than you are.
    • Cover up in style: Whenever possible, wear a wide-brimmed hat, pants, and long sleeves. Gloves help to minimize common signs of aging on our hands such as age spots. Sunglasses help reduce fine lines around our eyes.
    • Slather on the sunscreen every day before going outdoors: To protect your skin, apply sunscreen to all skin that clothing will not cover. You want to use a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 (or higher), and water resistance.
  1. Forget about indoor tanning: The sun, tanning beds, and sun lamps expose you to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. These rays accelerate skin aging.
  2. Apply moisturizer every day: As we age, skin becomes drier. Fine lines and wrinkles appear. Moisturizer traps water in our skin, giving it a more youthful appearance. For best results, use a facial moisturizer, body moisturizer, and lip balm.
  3. Wash away dirt and grime twice a day: How you wash your face can affect your appearance. For best results, you want to wash with warm water and a mild cleanser rather than soap. You also should avoid scrubbing your skin clean.
  4. Stop smoking: Tobacco smoke contains toxins that can lead to smoker’s face. Signs of smoker’s face include dull and dry complexion, loss of skin’s firmness, premature lines and wrinkles, and leathery skin.
  5. Eat healthy foods: A healthy diet promotes healthy skin. Make sure you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
  6. Get enough sleep: It’s called beauty rest for a reason. Sleep gives your body time to refresh and renew itself.

4 Solutions for Dry, Cracked Skin

Healthy skin is soft, supple, and moisturized, but when it loses moisture and that moisture isn’t replenished by frequent application of creams and lotions and drinking plenty of water, skin can become unhealthy, dry, and scaly. Severely dry skin can even begin to crack. What should you do when your skin is so dry that it forms gaping, painful cracks? Add moisture, stat.

Dry Skin Solution No. 1: Baths and Soaks
You may think that soaking dry, cracked skin in water is a good way to replenish lost moisture. And you’d be right — and wrong. Water can actually be drying to the skin, says Christine Lopez, MD, a dermatologist and assistant program director in the department of dermatology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

"Mere water will strip your skin of the essential oils," Dr. Lopez explains. But that doesn't mean that soaks and baths can't still be soothing for dry, cracked skin — you just have to bathe the right way.

Adding a few drops of a natural oil, like mineral, almond, or avocado oil, will help heal dry, cracked skin, Lopez says. However, it's important to limit those baths and showers to only a short time, no longer than 5 to 10 minutes with water that is only warm, not hot — hot water will only dry out the skin more. Lopez also suggests adding oatmeal or baking soda to the bath — about one cup for a tub full of water — to soothe the skin and help keep in moisture.

Dry Skin Solution No. 2: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
As soon as you get out of the bath, Lopez suggests gently patting skin dry with a towel — don't rub or remove all of the water. Next, apply a few drops of a natural oil or a rich moisturizing cream all over your body. This will help seal the moisture in.

For very dry, cracked skin, petroleum jelly is a good, inexpensive option to try. Lopez suggests rubbing in the petroleum jelly and letting it saturate the skin; if cracks are on the hands or feet, smear those areas well and cover them with cotton gloves or socks to hold the petroleum jelly in place overnight while you sleep.

Dry Skin Solution No. 3: Pumice With Caution
In general, pumicing or filing dry, cracked skin isn't a good idea.
"I would limit the use of pumice stones" and similar tools, says Lopez. "I wouldn't use that on skin other than heels or feet. On feet, where there's repeated trauma, you can collect dead skin. That is where pumice stones or files can remove extra layers of dead cells so that the moisturizing cream will be absorbed better."

Dry Skin Solution No. 4: Super Glue
Super Glue has another good use — dermatologists actually recommended using a dab of Super Glue on cracked skin to promote healing and prevent further drying. The active ingredient is the same as that of liquid bandages and other medical adhesives used to close cuts and wounds.

First, make sure the skin crack is cleaned, says Lopez. Then, squeezing the edges of the crack together, apply a bit of Super Glue — enough to hold it closed. Hold the edges together until the glue dries to make sure the crack doesn't open.

The best medicine for dry, cracked skin is prevention, according to Lopez. To prevent painfully dry, cracked skin, apply a daily moisturizer all over the body. But even if you have dry skin, Lopez suggests being careful about going too heavy on creams and oils on your face, as that can lead to acne.

8 Easy Home Remedies for Acne

You might be surprised to find that you already have several acne treatments right in your own home — and in your kitchen of all places. Common foods and ingredients, such as cucumbers, oatmeal, grapes, and yeast, can be mixed into a facial mask and turned into acne remedies. Giving yourself a homemade facial may help you prevent or clear acne and keep skin glowing, moisturized, and healthy.

Fran E. Cook-Bolden, MD, a dermatologist and director of the Skin Specialty Group and the Ethnic Skin Specialty Group in New York, suggests the following home remedies for acne

Grape Cleanser
Grab a few fresh grapes from your fridge, and you've got an easy facial cleanser. Cut two or three grapes in half and rub the flesh over your face and neck, says Dr. Cook-Bolden. Follow with a cool water rinse.

Cucumber Face Mask
"Make a paste by blending one small cucumber and 1 cup of oatmeal," says Cook-Bolden. Mix 1 teaspoon of this paste with 1 teaspoon of yogurt and apply it to your face. Leave it on for 30 minutes, and then rinse.

Cucumber Face Pack
This cooling, soothing mask will help smooth your skin, which can often feel rough from acne. "Mash one whole cucumber, strain the water, add 1 tablespoon of sugar, and mix well," says Cook-Bolden. "Apply to your face and leave it on for 10 minutes; then wash with cold water."

Simple Honey Mask
Before applying this mask, rinse your face with warm water to open up pores, says Cook-Bolden. Then apply honey and leave it on the skin for 30 minutes. Rinse the honey off with warm water; then rinse again with cold water to close the pores.

Yeast and Yogurt Mask for Oily Skin
Oily skin is prone to acne, and this home remedy can reduce excess oil and help clear acne. To make the mask, combine 1 teaspoon of brewer's yeast with a little plain yogurt to create a thin mixture. Cook-Bolden says, "Apply it thoroughly to all the oily areas and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water; then use cold water to close the pores."

Oatmeal Facial
Oatmeal is naturally soothing, and this simple oatmeal mask can also help clear acne. Mix together 2 teaspoons of oatmeal, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and enough water to form a paste. Smooth the paste all over your face and gently rub it in. Rinse thoroughly afterward.

Lemon-Egg Face Mask
This is a great all-purpose acne home remedy that can boost any skin type. "Squeeze half a lemon and mix the juice with one beaten egg white," recommends Cook-Bolden. Apply to the face, and leave the mask on overnight while you sleep. In the morning, wash your face with warm water. Be sure to keep the raw-egg mixture out of your mouth and eyes.

Turmeric Facial Mask
For beautiful skin, brides in India traditionally use a turmeric mask before their wedding, says Cook-Bolden. Ingredients for this acne remedy are available at spice markets and ethnic food stores. Mix together 1/2 cup of chickpea flour and 2 teaspoons each turmeric powder, sandalwood powder, and ghee (clarified butter) or almond oil, and then combine them with enough water to make a paste. "Apply and leave on for 5 to 10 minutes," says Cook-Bolden. "Rub with pressure with both palms and fingers to remove all the paste." Rinse well with water.

Homemade facial masks can rejuvenate your skin and help clear acne — and all of these recipes use common ingredients found in your pantry and refrigerator. Try one or more of the acne remedies to treat pimple-prone skin and see how your skin responds.

Natural Dry Skin Remedies

Dry skin doesn’t just feel rough to the touch: When it affects your complexion, makeup can look blotchy, drawing even more attention to your less-than-supple skin. The good news is that you don't need to head to the dermatologist or get a prescription to heal your dry skin — there are a number of natural remedy options that you can add to your skin care routine at home. In fact, the ingredients for these dry skin remedies might already be in your kitchen.
Why a Natural Dry Skin Remedy May Be Better
With the countless rows of jars, bottles, and tubes of lotions, creams, and fancy moisturizers, can a natural remedy really be a better choice? The answer is yes, says Christine Lopez, MD, a dermatologist and assistant program director in the department of dermatology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Natural oils and remedies tend to be pure, says Dr. Lopez, which makes them a better choice for many people. "Other over-the-counter products have a ton of ingredients in them,” adds Lopez. “Not only will they contain the active moisturizing products, but they can also have preservatives," That’s a given with water-based products. Alcohol and fragrances are other common ingredients in commercial products that can cause irritation or an allergic reaction, or be just more drying to skin.

It's often a good idea to keep it simple when it comes to beauty care, especially for people with allergies or a very sensitive complexion. Unlike lotions and creams with a water base and preservatives, pure oils have a natural base, making them great dry skin remedies.

The Basis of Dry Skin Remedies
Your skin naturally produces oil (sebum) which helps to protect the skin from moisture loss, but actions we take every day — forgetting to put on moisturizer or washing our hands in drying soap — can strip skin’s natural oils. Using beauty oils can help restore your skin’s sheen and put back a protective barrier against the elements to stop skin from losing its own natural moisture.

There are many ways to use natural oils, both on their own as a simple moisturizer and mixed with other ingredients to make a nourishing mask or exfoliating rub. Castor oil, lavender oil, and avocado oil each make a good natural remedy for dry skin, says Lopez. Aloe vera, a plant with natural healing properties, can also be infused in oils and used as a natural moisturizer. In its purest form, you can simply drizzle your favorite oil into warm bath water and treat yourself to a short soak; pat skin dry afterward to avoid rubbing off all the oil.

Try these dry skin remedies that use oils and other natural ingredients:
Olive oil cleanser. A great natural oil to use is olive oil, which works as a natural cleanser and moisturizer, says Brandy Crompton, a licensed aesthetician and spa manager of Lebliss Salon and Spa in Louisville, Ky. "You just rub the oil into your skin and drape a warm, damp cloth over your face until it cools," says Crompton, "then wipe away the excess oil."
Olive oil is a good choice for a cleanser because it won't strip your skin of natural oils, yet will get your skin clean, Crompton adds.
Easy oatmeal soak. Adding a cup of oatmeal to a warm water bath can naturally rehydrate dry skin, says Lopez. "The oat product itself is soothing," Lopez explains, and it helps skin retain the moisture from the bath water.
How to Avoid a Dry Skin Relapse
Use a rich moisturizer to protect skin and keep it from drying out. Make moisturizing part of your daily skin care routine each day as soon as you step out of the shower — slather your skin from head to toe with a rich, creamy product (the thicker it is, the richer it is). Other tips to keep skin in top shape: Avoid very hot showers, limit baths to 10 minutes, and opt for a mild body wash rather than a drying bar soap. You can also boost your water intake to hydrate your body and moisturize skin from the inside out.

Top 10 Tips for Healthy Winter Skin

Dry winter air can wreak havoc on your skin — leaving it dry, itchy, and irritated; but there are many simple ways to combat dry skin causes and help keep your skin feeling moist and supple all winter long. Here are 10 ways to get started.

Top 10 Tips for Healthy Winter Skin

1. Invest in a humidifier. Using a humidifier in your home or office will add moisture to dry winter air and help keep your skin hydrated. Run a humidifier in the rooms you spend the most time in, including your bedroom.

2. Lower the thermostat. When it's chilly outside, what's the first thing you want to do? Crank up the heat! But central heat can make the air in your house even drier. Try setting the thermostat at a cool, yet comfortable setting — 68°F to 72°F — to maintain healthy skin

3. Skip hot showers. Although it may be tempting to warm up with a long, steamy shower, hot water dries out your skin by stripping it of its natural oils. Instead, take a 5- to 10-minute lukewarm shower (or bath). You should also avoid using excessively hot water when washing your hands — if the water causes your skin to turn red, it’s too hot.

4. Choose cleanser wisely. The wrong soap can worsen itchy, dry skin. For instance, steer clear of regular bar soaps, since they tend to contain irritating ingredients and fragrances. Instead, start washing with a fragrance-free, moisturizing cleanser or gel. You can also prevent winter skin problems by using less soap, so limit your lathering to necessary areas, such as your hands, armpits, genitals, and feet..

5. Modify your facial skin care regimen for the season. During the winter months, choose cream-based cleansers, and apply toners and astringents sparingly, if at all. Many astringents contain alcohol, which can further dry your skin. Look for products that contain little or no alcohol — unless your skin is excessively oily. At night, use a richer moisturizer on your face.

6. Moisturize frequently. Maintain healthy skin by moisturizing after washing up. "Blot skin dry and apply a thick moisturizer within a few minutes after bathing to seal the water into the skin," says Linda Stein Gold, MD, director of dermatology clinical research and division head of dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital, West Bloomfield, MI. "It's best to use a cream or ointment in the winter. Lotions are better in warmer, humid climates. And don't forget your hands,” says Dr. Stein Gold. "Constant washing will cause the hands to take a beating. Apply hand cream after each washing, and wear waterproof gloves when washing dishes or cleaning around the house."

7. Apply sunscreen — even in winter. It is still important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays on cold, dreary days in winter. Before going outside, apply a moisturizing, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all exposed areas of your body.

8. Wear appropriate clothing. Many cold-weather fabrics can aggravate dry winter skin. "Keep wool and rough clothing from directly touching your skin," says Stein Gold. "This can cause dry skin to get irritated and itchy." Wear soft, breathable materials against your skin, and then pull on a warmer sweater. Protect your hands from cold winter air with gloves or mittens. Remember to choose a pair that won’t irritate your skin. If you prefer wool gloves, put cotton or silk glove liners on first.

9. Eat right and stay hydrated. "Sometimes when skin is very dry, it can be helped by foods or supplements that contain omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids, such as fish oil and flaxseed oil," says Barbara R. Reed, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, CO, and in private practice at Denver Skin Clinic. "For the most part, however, it is important to help the skin moisturize from the outside."

10. Change out of wet clothes quickly. Wearing wet clothes and shoes can further irritate your skin and cause itchiness. Be sure to remove wet gloves, socks, and pants as soon as possible.

If you still experience dryness, discomfort, and irritation after trying these healthy skin tips, Stein Gold suggests using an over-the-counter, 1-percent hydrocortisone cream. "If you don't see improvement in a few days, talk with your doctor," Stein Gold says. You may need a prescription-strength moisturizer to overcome winter's drying effects on your skin.

The 5 Steps to Correctly Washing Your Face

Step #1: Wash your face with lukewarm water and a cream cleanser. Warm water helps lift the dirt out of your skin, but hot water can be too drying. Cream cleansers are more hydrating, but if you wear a lot of makeup, you might want to use a gel cleanser and/or a makeup remover instead. After washing, dab your face with a towel—don’t rub. It will stretch your skin and lead to wrinkles.

Step #2: Take a cotton ball and dip it in toner and swipe it around your face, focusing on problem areas. For example, if you have an oily t-zone, toner is a huge help. You don’t need a lot! Just one soaked cotton ball is perfect.

Step #3: Serum is like a green juice for your skin. There are some amazing high-end ones, but you don’t need to spend to over due it—L’Oreal has some amazing ones that you can get at your local drugstore. Use one or two pumps for your entire face. This is also a great way to address any specific issues you have with your skin, because they make serums for everything: anti-aging, moisturizing, redness, etc.

Step #4: You can also mix your serum in with your moisturizer, which cuts down on a step. For night, pick a heavier moisturizer, but for day, make sure you choose one with SPF if you’re not going to apply sunscreen on your own.

Step #5: The last step—don’t forget your eye cream! The under eye area is the thinnest part of your skin, so it’s desperate for moisture. Massage or pat a pea-sized amount of eye cream under your eyes about half an inch under your brow bone. If you’re putting on makeup afterwards, wait a few minutes so the cream can sink in.

7 Simple Ways to Get Slim Naturally

Looking for ways to get slim naturally? If you want to lose weight, you don’t want to take diet pills or follow some ridiculous diet (cabbage, anyone?). What you need to learn is how people who are naturally slim get that way -- and stay that way.

If you find yourself trying to follow a complicated diet to lose weight or giving up the foods you love, you’re likely to give up and go back to your regular habits because they're easier.

The key to losing weight and keeping it off is to learn the little tricks that make losing weight easy.

Take a look at these seven simple ways to get slim naturally (say that 10 times fast!):

1. Eat five times a day, starting with breakfast

Many people skip breakfast, thinking they're saving themselves some calories. This rarely works -- you end up overeating at other times of the day when you become too hungry.

Your body has gone without food for several hours while you were sleeping. It needs that energy to get started. By eating five small meals each day, starting with breakfast, you’ll stoke the fires of your metabolism, making it easier to lose weight.

And your body doesn't absorb all the nutrients when you eat one big meal a day.  Breaking up your calorie intake into several smaller, more frequent meals makes sense all around.

The National Weight Control Registry reports that 78% of their members who have lost weight --- and kept it off -- eat breakfast every day.

2. Drink more water.

Surprisingly, many people reach for food when their body is actually thirsty. Water also helps your body to flush out toxins and helps keep you hydrated -- which helps keep you energized. According to the Mayo Clinic, even being slightly dehydrated can make you tired.  When you're tired, you won't be as active.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends 3.7 liters (15 cups) of water per day for men; 2.7 liters (11 cups) per day for women. This doesn't mean you should be drinking that much water.  You get water from the foods you eat (fruits, vegetables) and other liquids you drink (milk or juice, for example). About 19% of your water intake comes from foods you eat.

Drink at least 8 x 8 ounces of water per day and try to drink more if you are particularly active or if it's a hot day.

3. Grab a piece of fruit before heading out of the house.

Before you leave your house, be sure to take an apple or banana with you. When you’re out and about, you may not have access to healthy snacks when you get hungry. This could lead you straight to the drive-through. But, if you have a piece of fruit with you, you’ll have something to hold you over until you get home.

4. Eat slowly and stop eating before you feel full.

Have you ever noticed that naturally thin people don’t stuff themselves with excess amounts of food?  They'll rarely eat larger portions or go back for seconds, and more often than not they have a natural awareness of their bodies and stop eating when they recognize that little signal that says, “Thank you, I’ve had enough to eat for now.”
Start applying this habit in your own life by paying close attention to how your body feels as you eat.  When your body starts communicating that it is now satisfied, stop eating.

5. Watch your portion sizes.

Eating too much can negatively affect your plans to lose weight. When you don’t watch how much you eat, you’ll gain weight instead of losing it. People that stay naturally slim eat smaller portions.

6. Don’t drink your calories.

Whether your poison is energy drinks, lattes, sugary sodas, or even juice, beverages can contain a lot of calories and they don’t make you full. Swap these out for low- or no-calorie beverages to help you lose weight naturally.

7. Eat cake.

Or chocolate. Or potato chips. Whatever “bad” snack is your favorite, it’s okay to eat it sometimes, in normal sized portions. Naturally slim people allow themselves a few indulgences because they know this tends to prevent the overindulging that occurs when you deprive yourself of the foods you love.

Bonus Tip:  Get rid of the guilt.

Naturally thin people don’t beat themselves up for eating something they shouldn’t have - in fact, there are no forbidden foods in their world.  They eat what they want, but they don’t overdo it.  If they do eat something they would consider to be more fattening than their normal food choices, they don’t obsess over it for days.  They don’t beat themselves up for eating it, and they don’t jump to conclusions like they are out of control and can’t be trusted to make wise decisions.  They simply accept that they ate the food, and move on.  No regrets, no guilt.
How freeing would it feel to adopt this habit yourself?  Give it a try and notice how much better it feels to not have to carry such a heavy burden of guilt on your shoulders all the time.

How to apply face serum

You may live by the skin care mantra of cleanse, tone and mositurize but do you know where the face serum fits in?

Serums are relative newcomers to the anti aging skin care market and a lot of people (me included when I first starting using it) are unclear about exactly when and how to apply a skin serum to get the most benefit.  It’s an additional step in the daily skin care regimen and we’re not sure just when to use it. Under or over your moisturizer – last thing before your makeup – sometimes skin care manufacturers don’t make it clear.

You might assume that if you don’t get guidance from the makers – it doesn’t matter how you apply it.

But it does – applying your serum properly has a real impact on how well the active anti aging ingredients penetrate below the skin’s surface. Ultimately it can make a difference as to whether you get the positive results you want.

Take time with face serum

Corrrect application of all skin care products is important  – especially if they contain active ingredients that need to penetrate to the dermis to be effective.  Not applying products in the right way can mean the active ingredients just sit on the surface and fail to have any effect at all.

The purpose of a face serum is to deliver active ingredients to your skin – if you don’t put it on right the money you’ve spent could be wasted.
It’s definitely worth taking a little bit of time now to learn the best way of applying face serum to get the most from the active ingredients.

Stick to one brand

Speaking from experience  I  don’t always buy the products I use from only one brand.  I use them at different rates and sometimes I find that the cream from one brand suits me whilst the cleanser from the same line just doesn’t.  Or I buy from different brands at different times because I run out of things or get tempted by new skin care products.
Like most women – I have ended up with a bit of an odd assortment of bottles and jars on my bathroom shelf.  But does it matter that your skin serum is not the same brand as your hydrating cream?
My view is that where products are designed to work together you will tend to get better results.
Take the wonderful Skin Medica TNS Regeneration System Kit – the moisturizer and the anti aging serum are sold as a kit and they work perfectly together as they are designed to do.  Worth getting because results are much better together than alone.
There are many other brands out there – Murad Skin Care for example – where skin care is sold in a package or kit usually including a serum.  Obviously they sell more products this way but customers benefit too.

Different brands may clash

Serums and moisturizers can be layered on the skin without problems if they are designed to go together. Not always the case if you mix and match brands though.  I see quite a lot of reports in beauty forums and customer reviews that even the best skin serum doesn’t work very well with the customer’s normal moisturizer.
The result – difficulty in applying make up or peeling and ‘pilling’ of foundation on the skin. Definitely not this season’s best look!
The cause of the problem is likely to be the conflict between the serum formulation – usually a gel type base – and the face moisturizer which is often a lotion or a cream.

Don’t apply too much face serum

If you get problems with serums splitting or not sinking in – it may be nothing to do with the product.  It may simply be you are applying too much in the hope of instant younger looking skin.  It’s a common problem according to dermatologists.
Putting on too much cream or serum is a recipe for problems.  Skin can only absorb so much and the residue will remain on the surface and can block pores causing breakouts or coagulate and ruin your makeup.
Start off by reading the instructions on the packaging and use only the amount of product recommended.  Don’t overload your skin.

Active ingredients have to work together

The other issue with using competing brands of skin care is that the ingredients may cause conflicts and confusion.  An active ingredient in your serum may cause irritation when combined with a different active in your face cream or they may just cancel one another out.
Quality brands have been formulated to deliver outcomes – skin clarity, reduction in fine lines – based on a set of ingredients that work together.
Using products from the same line will reinforce the results – using a randomly chosen alternative may undermine them.
